Who in the blazes?

Killerpoke is the independent blog of Nick Craske, creative director, living and working in London. Killerpoke is a method of inducing irreversible hardware damage on a machine. As a little-scamp the most rewarding play was always disassembling objects, turning them upside down, inside out and making something more useful, unexpected or playful - and sometimes just to enjoy pulling them apart. I'm even more curious now, and increasingly fascinated with technology and narrative to communicate and entertain in the digital world. Work is play.

    Apple have been developing NFC-based technologies for quite some time and it appears they will be implementing these in a new patent application for an app called “Products”.


    Apple was first reported to be testing RFID iPhones last year.

    Simplifying c++ with the openframework

    Openframeworks is a c++ library designed to assist the creative process by providing a simple and intuitive framework for experimentation.

    The library is designed to work as a general purpose glue, and wraps together several commonly used libraries under a tidy interface: openGL for graphics, rtAudio for audio input and output, freeType for fonts, freeImage for image input and output, quicktime for video playing and sequence grabbing.

    The code is written to be both cross platform (PC, Mac, Linux, iPhone) and cross compiler. The API is designed to be minimal and easy to grasp. There are very few classes, and inside of those classes, there are very few functions. The code has been implemented so that within the classes there are minimal cross-referening, making it quite easy to rip out and reuse and/or extend.

    ‘I am Sitting in a Room’ – intriguing YouTube duplication and compression experiment

    I started this project exactly 1 year ago, almost to the hour. The final version is a lot different than I thought it would be, I was expecting a lot more digital video noise, and a lot less digital audio noise. Let this be a lesson, though, always be careful how you convert your digital media!

    An homage to the great Alvin Lucier, this piece explores the ‘photocopy effect’, where upon repeated copies the object begin to accumulate the idiosyncrasies of the medium doing the copying. Full words: I am sitting in a room different from the one you are in now. I am recording the sound of my speaking voice as well as the image of myself, and I am going to upload it to YouTube, rip it from YouTube, and upload it again and again, until the original characteristics of both my voice and my image are destroyed. What you will see and hear, then, are the artifacts inherent in the video codec of both YouTube and the mp4 format I convert it to on my computer. I regard this activity not so much as a demonstration of a digital fact, but more as a way to eliminate all human qualities my speech and image might have.

    Nokia Ovi Maps have created an impressive interactive installation. Nokia & Seeper combined a high powered projection installation with dynamic face tracking, custom optical flow and a bespoke motion application called Chess.
